12 衔接、指代与篇章连续:跨句追踪同一个对象

理解每个单句仍可能读不懂段落,因为作者通过代词、替代、重复、同义改写和逻辑连接把信息串联。指代链一旦接错,整段论证会换主语。

本章研究的问题

this, it, they, such a result 到底指什么?先行词不总是最近名词,也可能是整个命题或推理动作。

核心原理

  • 指代匹配语法数、语义类别和篇章显著性,不只看距离。
  • this/that 可指名词、事件或前述整个命题。
  • 同一对象常被重新命名,如 the interventionthe programthis policy
  • 连接词明确因果、转折、递进或举例;无连接词时关系也可能被隐含。
  • 段落话题通常通过已知信息链维持,再在句尾加入新信息。

句子 1

The survey omitted temporary workers. This exclusion may bias the estimate.

This exclusion 把前一句事件名词化并作为新句主语。

句子 2

The model predicts a decline, but the data do not support it.

it 最自然指 decline 这一预测内容,不是 model 本身。

句子 3

The city introduced a fee. The policy reduced traffic initially.

The policy 重新命名前句的 fee 制度,建立词汇衔接。

Some firms adopted the technology; others delayed doing so.

others 指其余 firms,doing so 替代 adopted the technology。

精读材料

The university offered students optional writing support. Uptake was highest among students who already had strong grades. This pattern complicates a simple comparison between users and nonusers, because the two groups differed before support began. Such preexisting differences can produce an apparent program effect even when the service itself has little impact. A credible evaluation must therefore address selection.

长段精读:论文级句群

Early experiments suggested that the intervention increased trust, but later replications complicated that conclusion. They found smaller effects in communities where local institutions were already viewed as legitimate. This pattern does not necessarily contradict the original finding; rather, it suggests that the intervention may matter most where baseline trust is low. Such a possibility shifts the question from whether the program works to for whom and under what conditions it works.

迁移与反思

给段落中的每个代词画箭头,给同一对象的不同称呼标同色,再圈出连接词。若箭头无法唯一落点,就记录真实歧义,而不是强行猜测。
